spotlight on: Becherovka

SPOTLIGHT ON: BECHEROVKA

·         Becherovka is a potable bitter from the Czech Republic.

·         It is a clear liqueur with abundant notes of autumnal spices, most notably cinnamon and star anise.

·         Along with cinnamon and star anise, there are 30 other herbs and spices that go into the mix.

·         Only two people know the blend of herbs and spices that go into Becherovka. Only these two people are allowed into the room in the distillery in which the ingredients are blended.

·         Josef Vitus Becher invented  Becherovka in the 1800’s. The Jan Becher museum in the Czech Republic is devoted to Becherovka.

·         In the 1900’s a Slovak version of Becherovka was produced. The man behind the Slovak version claimed to have gotten the recipe from a decendent of Becher. The man claimed the Becher descendent wanted to ensure Becherovka would continue to be produced after WWII, so he gave it to the Slovenian man to make sure the legacy would continue. This claim was not proven in court and the Slovenian man was sent to jail.
