Spotlight on: Meletti Amaro

Spotlight on: Meletti Amaro

1.       Meletti is an amaro made using a secret recipe.  It is a bittersweet digestif with a deep color and pronounced notes of saffron, violet, and caramel.

2.       Meletti is made by infusing the base alcohol with a secret blend of ingredients via a cold percolation process.  This process is similar to the process used to brew coffee.  The blend of herbs/spices is put in the upper part of a still and the base alcohol is pumped over and through it.  This process is repeated until someone from the Meletti family tastes the amaro and deems it ready to be filtered and bottled. Cold percolation infused alcohol faster than maceration.

3.       An amaro is a bittersweet herbal digestive from Italy.  The name “amaro” means  “bitter” in Italian.  This kind of liqueur is made all over Europe, but “amaro” is only applied to those coming from Italy.  Amari are made by infusing herbs, spices, botanicals, etc. into wine or a neutral spirit and adding sugar syrup, then aging the mixture in casks or in the bottle.

4.       Digestivo or digestif, are drinks that are intended to be imbibed after a meal.  Amari contain carminative herbs.  Carminative herbs actually help to prevent gas from forming in the intestines.  There are lots of carminative herbs; some examples are saffron, thyme, cinnamon, and wormwood.
