Szgeti Sparking Gruner

NV Szgeti, Brut Gruner Veltliner, Burgenland, Austria $13/50

Back to Austria’s we’re traveling to the famed area of Burgenland, the easternmost state in Austria. Here we are specifically going to Neusiedler Lake, the Northern part of the Burgenland.

Modern Szgeti winery was founded in 1990 when brothers Norbert and Peter Szigeti returned to their hometown of Gols, to take over the family business. Norbert had formal training in an oenology school followed by working for a master sparkling producer in Vienna. Peter studied hotel management and worked all over Europe. The two have been committed to producing affordable sparkling wines without any chemical intervention. They only produce 600,000 bottles a year, making them a very small producer.
NV Szgeti is made from 100% Gruner Veltliner Sec, meaning the wine is totally dry. The wine in grown on mostly limestone and slate soils. The wine is made into a sparkling style through Methode Champenois, meaning it goes through 2nd fermentation in the bottle. Although the brothers are committed to traditional methods they feel strongly the wine should not lose the Gruner quality and style. The area is marked by hot summers and cold winters and has a large lake providing plenty of  water to the area. While Lake Neusiedler is technically a DAC region Szgeti does not qualify to be labeled DAC as only Zweigelt in the area can qualify.
