Valdesil, Mencia Description

2011 Valdesil, Mencia, Valderroas, Spain $12/46

Tucked into the heart of North West Spain, Galicia is one of the most respected wine regions that shows incredible terroir. Valderroas, the smallest DO inside of Galicia, is one of the highest points of elevation in the NW of Spain. Mencia is an indigenous grape that grows throughout Galicia, Bierzo, and Rias Baixas.

The winery was first established in 1885, by an ancestor of the Prada family, one of the most famous winemakers in Rioja. The first parcel planted was the Godello grape, and it was not until many years later that they began to plant Mencia. The parcels were sold off throughout the 1900, though the family largely still operated the wine making and growing process. The business declined as Mencia and Godello did not acquire international recognition. In 2001 the family began to buy back all the small parcels of vineyards believing in the power of the grapes and soil that they had.

Valdesil Mencia grows on slate soils in Valderroas, Spain. The region has the record highest and lowest temperatures and the lowest average rainfall in Galicia, allowing the grapes to struggle for water and thus produce more concentrated flavors. This wine is aged in 100% stainless steel. Mencia has long been thought to be a great synonym for both Cab Franc and Gamay (from Beaujolais). It’s ability to express terroir is much like that of France and is an awesome discovery wine for our guests.

This particular vintage was a tough one to produce. More than 20% of the product was lost due to heavy rain in Spring, early frost in May, and mold outbreak in June. Valdesil believes in value and bringing their products to their clients for a minimal cost.

IMPORTANT: This wine is unfiltered which means there is sediment in the bottom of the bottle. The last ¾” should not be poured out of the bottle and we should be warning any guests who order this BTB!!!
